Effective Use of Data to Address Individual Student Needs in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Date: March 18, 2015 – May 14, 2015
Location: Webinar

This webinar series is designed to address specific challenges that alliance schools within the Middle Grades School Climate Alliance (MGSCA) have as they investigate and make improvements in school climate. These events build on the MGSCA's long-term goals to improve school climate in participating middle schools and to facilitate the systematic use of data-based inquiry practices at the school and district levels. As a result of this webinar series, alliance member school participants:

  • Became familiar with a problem-centered inquiry process to support the ongoing use of data for improving school climate (Webinar #1)
  • Learned data-based inquiry processes to understand and address issues of equity (Webinar #2)
  • Explored a data-based inquiry process to identify and effectively address individual students' social-emotional needs (Webinar #3)
  • Learned from experts and each other to support ongoing efforts in understanding and addressing school climate issues

Speakers included:

The first webinar, held on March 18, 2015, provided a general introduction to the School Wide Information System (SWIS) using data from a demonstration site. The presenter modeled how to generate a precise problem statement, determine appropriate interventions, and how to drill down in the data to check progress and monitor the fidelity.

In the second webinar held on April 28, 2015, Barbara Kelley used disproportionality data from a demonstration site to examine equity issues and form a problem statement. Using the demonstration website, she modeled using data to create a plan to address the problem statement and monitor progress.

In the third and final webinar, held on May 14, 2015, featured Barbara Kelley provided an introduction to the Individual Student Information System (ISIS) to identify intensive needs of individual students. She modeled how to identify needs from student behavior and selecting, implementing, and monitoring a comprehensive set of interventions to address the individual student's needs.

The webinars were for the six districts and 19 schools in the Middle Grades School Climate Alliance (MGSCA). REL West invited the district staff, administrators from each school, and school climate team members.
